Susie went to the rainbow bridge on Friday November 16th. Her time with DARE was short but she touched many lives and will be missed.

A little more than 24 hours after DARE rescued this sweet little girl from a high kill shelter, Susie arrived -- via a heroic emergency transport -- successfully in Jacksonville. Every step along her route... from those who retrieved her and comforted her through the night, through to the ones who provided safe passage to her final arrival into her fosters welcoming arms -- this delicate creature touched all our hearts and our souls. Today she faced traditional medicine, but unfortunately there was little that mainstream veterinary science could do...the cancer has metastasized throughout her chest and abdomen. She will be taken to an alternative medicine specialist who we hope will provide her with a heightened quality of life that will enable her to enjoy the time she has left.

One thing is certain. Though Saturday and Sunday may have been difficult days for many of Susie's rescuers, they were most likely two of the best days of her life. Everywhere she went, she was loved -- something most likely lacking from her earlier years of endless breeding and little medical care. Now she will spend her days hanging with her foster brothers and sisters, eating healthy food, enjoying her freedom and made comfortable by pain meds and cancer-fighting herbs. Susie is only 5 years old and could have lived a happy long life with proper treatment had the breeder who had her cared. She will send her last days knowing she is loved and cared for.
