![]() Adoption Dog of the Week About DARE |
|
Update We are very sorry to say that Mita went to the Rainbow Bridge this past week. We believe that he died due to a blood clot caused by the heartworms he had. He was a very strong heartworm positive when he came to DARE, meaning that he had the heartworms for quite some time with no treatment. We did all we could to treat him very gently and slowly, to prevent blood clots from forming, but even doing all we did to keep him safe and healthy, we could not save his life. PLEASE do not let what happened to Mita happen to your dog!! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, we beg of you, PLEASE spend the money to put your dog on heartworm preventative. It is a SMALL price to pay to SAVE YOUR PET'S LIFE! A few dollars a month could have saved this wonderful, amazing dog, if his family had only put him on heartworm preventative. Our sympathies to Mita's foster mom who is very sad, as are all the members & volunteers of DARE. My name is Mita. I am a heartworm positive guy and live with my foster mom, her gang of doxies and other fosters. Most of the others are all doxie...I am a mix of dachshund and miniature pinscher. The vet that I see thinks I am around 6 years old. When I came into DARE from the shelter I was so sick and thin that I could not begin my heartworm treatment. After several weeks, I gained a little weight and began feeling a bit better. I then began a holistic heartworm treatment. It sure tastes nasty and I get it 2 times a day every single day! I use the doggie door, will sleep in a crate (though I prefer the big bed where I can sleep pressed up against my foster mom), love treats, and take my medicine because I know it will be followed by peanut butter. I cannot wait to be in a forever home with no other dogs. I want all the attention and object strenuously when I am near my foster mom or on her lap and the other dogs that live here even walk near us. UPDATE! My foster mom wanted me to send an update. I am not doing well. Have had several urinary tract infections, it seems I did not react well to the homeopathic heart worm treatment and for several days had to be given sub-q fluids.
Both my foster mom and I do not like the sub-q treatments. My foster mom wraps me in a towel and we sit on the floor in the bathroom with the door closed so the others do not disturb us. She inserts the needle under the skin between my shoulder blades. It only takes a couple of minutes for the proper amount of fluid to go in. I always get a treat and a long cuddle after the treatment. I love the treat and deserve it since I am such a good boy. My foster mom loves giving me my treat and especially loves the cuddle.
I have started the standard heartworm treatment. I am dehydrated again and the vet thinks I may have some kidney damage. My foster mom made a huge pot of beef broth with no salt, a touch of garlic and some vegies and gives me a cup at a time several times a day to make sure I get plenty of fluids. I spend the day in a crate except when I go for a short walks on a leash. No running and playing for me!
I only want my foster mom and my special doggy friend Miami Hope around me. She is a DARE foster dog too! I do not like it when the other dogs come up to my crate or even pass by. I love when I get alone time with my foster mom and Miami Hope keeps me company on a bed right next to my crate. Please keep me in your thoughts. I have a long road ahead of me and I want so much to get better so I can romp and play!
